The Absent One (2014)

Horror Hunters is a Danish film directed by Mikkel Nørgaard. In its native land, this film recently became the highest grossing domestic film in history. Now it's coming to DVD internationally and you'll have a chance to see it as well.

The film is an extremely graphic and unflinching crime film--one that you should be warned about before you decide to see it or not. While it's extremely well made, there are also some very graphic murders, tons of blood, rape and other bits of nastiness that make this a poor choice if you want to watch a film with the kids or your mother. Think twice before you'd consider doing this...no, think three times!

The film is a bit reminiscent of the American television shows "Cold Case" or "Cold Case Files" in that the story involves a police unit which investigates unsolved crimes. However, the case is unusual because someone has already been convicted of the crime. It seems that a police captain KNOWS there's much more to the case but has been unable to go further with the case. How he passes it on to the team is something...really, really something.

This case turns out to be 20 years old. And, through the course of the film, it turns out that the case has a lot of similarities to other cases committed since--horrible, senseless and violent crimes committed for kicks. The key to solving this is a woman named Kimmee who disappeared long, long ago as well as her involvement with a pair of rich and malevolent prep school teens. But, solving any of these crimes will be very difficult, as the perpetrators are powerful and well connected. It's made even more difficult because one of the investigators is an emotional mess himself and you really aren't sure if he'll solve the crime or end up getting himself killed due to his recklessness and unwillingness to back down when he's pressured to do so by his superiors.

As I first mentioned, the film is very graphic--much more so than I usually would watch. On the other hand, the plot is very intelligently written and the story is one that sucks you in and won't let you go until the guilty are brought to justice. For crimes of cop stories that don't mind a film that is very edgy and dark, this one is well worth seeing.

Blood Father (2016)

Taken meets Sicario meets Sons of Anarchy in the new action thriller; Blood Father, which reminds us once again why you don't mess with Mel Gibson's family.

Oh Mel Gibson, you amazing, charismatic, volatile, genius, we freaking missed you. It's been 6 years since we had a good reason to be excited about a Mel Gibson movie and he's back with a bang and more than a few growls in Blood Father. Watching this film I found myself with a big smile on my face and saying things like "Hell yeah", "that's right", and "let's go" throughout the duration of this incredibly enjoyable action thrill ride. Mel plays a formerly violent ex convict trying to live a quiet life as a tattoo artist when he is dragged into a war with a violent gang in order to protect his estranged daughter (played by Erin Moriarity) who suddenly comes back into his life. All hell breaks loose as Mel and his daughter go on the run through the California desert dodging (and spraying) bullets, gang bangers, Sicarios, and vengeful bikers left and right all while both trying to stay sober.

"Don't worry I'm not dying, I'm just in El Centro" is just one of the many quotable lines from this tense, gritty, violent, and surprisingly funny action thriller from director Jean-Francois Richet. The best part about Blood Father is that it's exactly the film you think it's going to be. If you've seen the trailer you know this movie, and in this case that's not a bad thing. The film never once deviates from its plot and tone over the course of its perfectly taut 88-minute run time. There's no fluff, no unnecessary dialogue or characters, just hard-hitting action and thrills. It's unapologetic in its simple reasoning to have Mel Gibson doing what he does best; playing a father and busting heads. Blood Father is essentially a modern day western with motorcycles instead of horses and Mel absolutely killing it as the not-to-be-messed-with man with a troubled past. His character John Link has done far more bad in his life than good and sees protecting his daughter as the last chance he may ever have to atone for his sins, even if it means doing those bad things again. The world of Blood Father is a world filled with gangs, killers, drugs and criminals, a world that John Link is all to familiar with and not that far removed from. Gibson is at this best in years playing the hardened ex con Link with that same simmering intensity and wild-eyed look that he's been perfecting since Mad Max.

The film contains some gorgeous cinematography reminiscent of old Sergio Leone westerns and more recent desert thrillers like No Country for Old Men. The supporting cast around Gibson and Moriarity is fantastic as well. William H. Macy steals his few scenes as Gibson's sponsor/best friend, Diego Luna is great as the main villain, and Michael Parks is extremely entertaining as a sociopathic ex Nazi and former colleague of Link's. The biggest problem with Blood Father is the extremely limited release the studio slapped it with (no doubt a lingering middle finger to Mel I'm sure). If you can catch it on the big screen you absolutely have to see it but if not definitely watch it on VOD. Blood Father is the kind of lurid, pulpy, vengeance flick that was so popular in the 80's and 90's, which in a summer filled with bloated CGI filled blockbusters is a welcome sight. It's a simple action thriller about a guy with a damaged past just looking for a little redemption. Is it art-imitating life? Possibly, either way it's an awesome time that's not to be missed.

A Conspiracy of Faith (2016)

When I went to see the film The Keeper of Lost Causes, I loved the movie so much that when I discovered it was one in a trilogy called Department Q, I had to see the others. I saw the second of the movies, The Absent One and was as impressed with it as the first. Now I'm up to A Conspiracy of Faith and I'm Definitely impress with the trilogy as a whole, but must confess, this is the weakest out of them all.

In A Conspiracy of Faith, police detective Carl ls burnt out and needs some resurgence that his job is worth it as he works the cold case Department Q. This comes at a bad time when Department Q catches the case of a 3 year old murder, and discover the killer is not done killing.

The movie takes a certain turn away form the other two. The case is not as complex, it's more right in your face, which allows for more action. It's the type of format I would expect from the second movie not the third.

On it's own A Conspiracy of Faith is a suspenseful action thriller, that's straight up protagonist vs. antagonist with a lot of dark themes and concepts that make for a remarkable film.

As part of the Department Q trilogy, it's new take on the crime drama series makes it fall into the third movie cruse.

Klown Forever (2015)

I've seen this movie gotten some criticism, mostly comparing it to the first installment (Klovn). It has been too long since I saw the first one for me to compare the two - but I had a great time with this one. The plot is fairly simple, Casper is moving to LA, when Frank needs him as a friend. They're publishing a book together about their friendship, which makes the situation even harder for Frank. The plot then becomes, well, something like a train wreck in slow motion.

I am a big fan of Curb your Enthusiasm and that kind of "cringe" humor, and this is very much in the same spirit. Only dirtier and at times quite juvenile. But the jokes are not really juvenile, but rather uses sexual situations and ideas as a source of embarrassing situations. And it works quite well.

While Curb your enthusiasm has some sort of realism, it's also often really over the top and playful. Klovn is at times like this, but what impresses me the most is that no matter how bizarre the situations are, they usually manage to build up to it in a way that feels realistic. They have established characters that you believe can make the worst decisions in the worst of circumstances. Maybe the point where the realism breaks is how accepting and open the friends and families of the Frank and Casper are.

The Devil's Dolls (2016)

A serial killer leaves behind a box of "worry dolls" after he is killed by cops. Basically, you tell your worries to a worry doll and supposedly it takes them into itself thus liberating you. Anyhow (yawn), the dolls (4 or 5, I believe) accidentally get distributed while in transit to police headquarters. Not a good thing for the new owners whose fears and insecurities become amplified to paranoia by the dolls.

The good news: Movie could have been longer. But don't take this to mean it was a terrible movie. It was just a straight-forward, "nothing new or surprising" movie. Once you learn about the dolls in the earlier part of the film, your brain just coasts thru some bloody, but unremarkable deaths until the end where there is a little bit of the unexpected. Before I close, let me say this: A human being on fire is not funny. But I think that if in a movie said human is made to run a considerable distance while aflame....well...you know. I'm only human, folks! Love, Boloxxxi.

Found Footage 3D (2016)

All I can say is wow! Funny, scary, and emotional. What more could you want in a film?

The title doesn't do the movie justice. While exploring and criticizing all that has been done wrong in found footage movies, Found Footage 3D is a love letter and does everything right to elevate the genre. The first half of the movie is side-splitting fun, mocking all found footage films but Blair Witch. Strong character development that makes us truly care about the characters as the horror sets in. Once the movie turns frightening, in a shocking way, it is quite intense. Periods of quiet punctuated by gore and jump scares, the laughter fades and you hold your breath. The ending is spectacular, including an innovative split-screen. The 3D is high quality and gives the scenes more depth. It's some of the best 3D that I've seen, making the viewer feel like a part of the action.

Overall, this is a must see film. I can't wait for the full theatrical release.

The Master Cleanse (2016)

Greetings again from the darkness. Sometimes, it's just difficult to know how to describe or discuss a movie. This happens more frequently at film festivals where the most creative and risky films often find their only audience. This first feature film from writer/director Bobby Miller isn't really a comedy – though there are some uneasy laughs; and it isn't really a horror film – though isolated cabins in the woods and creepy little creatures give the impression that it could go that way.

Johnny Galecki ("The Big Bang Theory") stars as Paul, a down-on-his-luck nice guy who hasn't recovered emotionally from being dumped at the altar by his fiancé. One night he's dozing on the sofa when a TV ad captures his attention … it's a spiritual retreat for the downtrodden! The timing couldn't be better.

He's joined at the isolated retreat by struggling actress Maggie (Anna Friel), a young couple, Eric (Kyle Gallner) and Lily (Diana Bang) working through relationship issues, and a quasi-caretaker and holdover client played by Kevin J O'Connor. The on-site leader is played in full-bellow mode by the great Angelica Huston.

Day one is the juice cleanse, and the participants have to force down a disgusting concoction designed to "eliminate" … the step preceding "termination". Elimination is pretty easy to figure out, as our new friends expel from both ends (fortunately this is mostly implied, not shown). While that part might be expected, the surprise comes in the form of the eliminated creatures unique to each of our players … little critters representing the emotional baggage we all carry inside.

In the midst of misery, the retreaters are told that the movement (no pun intended) leader (Oliver Platt) will be arriving soon. He's kind of a cult-like figure without the expected pretentiousness. In fact, he's a pretty nice guy that seems to really care. Of course, that would be a pretty boring story, so plenty of things go awry during the process.

"Let's Get Pure" is the name for the retreat, and the idea of physically removing our negative energy and emotional baggage does make some sense. Director Miller seems to blend the worlds of early David Cronenberg and "Gremlins" to deliver an odd little film that could develop a cult following of its own. It's a serious message conveyed in a not so serious way. Galecki and Friel do a nice job of keeping us grounded and giving us some peeps to pull for. Just watch that final step … termination can be brutal.

My Father, Die (2016)

Deaf and mute since having his hearing knocked out at the age of 12, Asher has been training for almost two decades to avenge himself on Ivan, the man that killed his older brother, 21 years ago. And now that his nemesis is out of prison, he gets his chance. But Asher's target also happens to be his father.

Pet (2016)

A psychological thriller about a man who bumps into an old flame and subsequently becomes obsessed with her, leading him to hold her captive underneath the animal shelter where he works. But what will the victim have in store for her assailant?

Under the Shadow (2016)

I saw this at the Phoenix Film Festival. I'd say this is tied for my favourite horror movie from that festival (with Eyes of my Mother...also amazing).

Ghost movies are really the only horror films that stand of chance of scaring me these days. There were a few times during this film that I was completely tense, and a few times, absolutely on the verge of terror as to what was going to happen next. The film was just so well done in terms of pacing.

Unfortunately, ghost movies also suffer from poor endings, quite frequently. This ending was better than most, but something about it didn't sit right with me, and that's all I'll say to prevent spoilers. You may disagree entirely. I'm a tough one on endings.

I really hope this gets a wide distribution, because if you're at all a fan of ghost movies, this movie is just fantastic. A definite must see!

War on Everyone (2016)

Films come out of nowhere sometimes and that's exactly what War on Everyone did to me. Having only seen The Guard when it comes to John Michael McDonagh's filmography, I was just hoping for a film as good as that. I liked what I'd heard of the plot and the film had two leading men I hope would form a memorable duo, along the lines of Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys earlier this year.

Detectives Terry Monroe (Alexander Skarsgard) and Bob Bolano (Michael Pena) are two corrupt as they come cops who definitely don't do most of their job by the book. Their methods of law enforcement catch up with them though when they interfere with the business dealings of a dangerous criminal.

Disappointingly, War on Everyone is a very hit and miss film, leaning more towards the latter as well. I really liked the sound of the story and the film starts off very well, a scene involving a car chase and a mime leaving me excited for the tone this film was going for. It maintains its good start for a little while until the story starts to unravel some more.

McDonagh lets the film slow down far too often and with the story introducing subplot after subplot, I just didn't really care about how it finished. McDonagh is a talented writer mind, penning a script that is not just offensive for the sake of it, instead using its insults cleverly at times to produce some genuine laugh out loud moments. Unfortunately, it does feel that they're trying too hard to be offensive at times and some of the jokes don't really land.

Coming to the performances, War on Everyone doesn't really feature such a memorable duo in the lead roles. I am a big fan of Michael Pena but, while he gives the best performance in the film, he can't do enough to save it. Alexander Skarsgard doesn't really do much wrong, except for that weird walk he has going on, and he shows some good comedic chops at times but he just feels a bit awkward next to Pena, who is much more suited to the role.

Whoever keeps trying to make Theo James happen needs to stop because he's just not that good an actor and he gives a very underwhelming performance as a villain that should have been a little more spectacular.

So, while it does have some funny moments, War on Everyone is undoubtedly a mess of a film that will leave you wanting to watch the far superior The Nice Guys again. One final point; Mr McDonagh I think you're a talented guy but that last scene and closing line? You are far from being Quentin Tarantino.

The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)

Excellent performances and interesting source material (MR Carey adapting his own novel), plus imaginative direction (Scottish director Colm McCarthy), create a chilling sci-fi tale of hungries (zombies) versus humanity.

The opening sequence sets the tone. Melanie, a young, polite, and courteous girl manacles herself into a wheel chair. She seems entirely innocent and harmless, yet her captors fear otherwise. She and other children, each similarly restrained, are given an armed escort to a classroom. It's an arresting start and it grabs our attention. Sennia Nanua plays Melanie and the story revolves around her. We watch society collapsing through her eyes, see her threatened by the human beings around her, and fear for her. We watch her do terrible things, and yet we root for her. Everything is uncertain. Nothing is as it seems. It's a brilliant performance from a new talent, and it serves the film perfectly.

Melanie is surrounded by contrasting emotions from those nearest to her. Gemma Arterton is excellent as protective and caring psychologist/teacher Helen Justineau, fiercely defending Melanie against the machinations of Dr Caroline Caldwell (Glenn Close) who sees Melanie as a specimen to be dissected. Paddy Considine convinces as Sergeant Eddie Parks, a tough, no- nonsense soldier fighting a losing battle.

Colm McCarthy brings this all together superbly, belying the film's modest budget. Striking visuals and frenetic action are never allowed to overwhelm the characters, who take centre stage. And at it's heart is Melanie. Confusing, ambivalent, terrifying, lovable Melanie. It's a wonderful turn from Sennia Nanua.

Miss Hokusai (2015)

Miss Hokusai is a "slice of life" animation, it portrays the characters' at their daily lives in briskly light mood. It may set in one of the most romanticized eras, yet it's mostly a few short stories about artists, especially the heroine Oei, woven together. This is a tribute to Japanese classic painting ukiyo-e, the tumultuous time told in different light and appreciation of the artists themselves.

Oei is the daughter of talented painter Hokusai, who has a knack for painting herself. She can be crude at times, but she gives of warm subtle kindness, especially with her drawings. There's no great dilemma or adventure, although it presents a few strange mysteries. The animation is more of a method to appreciate the art as it changes constantly when the characters do narrative or monologue.

It uses classic touches on the tales, which can seem supernatural yet bizarrely fitting for that particular era. The setting is made with great care, details like the street corner or dimmed room with faint light of candles provide fine atmosphere for these characters to play in. Occasionally, they would talk in vague words, it's not a drama where people yell at each other frequently, there's a restrained on their mannerisms.

Miss Hokusai is a nice homage to early art works, celebrated by modern Japanese animation, it's quaint, unimposing and warmly colorful.

Certain Women (2016)

Kelly Reichardt has created yet another nuanced and heart-wrenching masterpiece, this time based on Montana writer Maile Meloy's short stories. Weaving together four reserved women's lives in Livingston, Montana may not sound like the kind of film that could climb its way into your innermost guts and set up a campfire; But that is exactly what this revelatory film did for me.

Reichardt's all-star cast members give some of their greatest recent performances, led by Laura Dern as a lovelorn lawyer, Michelle Williams as a persistent progressive parent, and Kristen Stewart as an obliviously motivated 20-something. But it's astounding newcomer Lily Gladstone who humbly steals the show, as a hard-working rancher. I must say that watching someone riding a horse has truly never been such a romantic experience in all my cinematic life. Like all of Kelly Reichardt's previous treasures — OLD JOY (2006), WENDY & LUCY (2008), MEEK'S CUTOFF (2010), NiGHT MOVES (2013) — her understanding of classic American cinema is boundless, allowing her to re-envision those stories and images, breathing her very particular brand of stoic yearning into each and every gesture.
